Kai is born!
Kai Stone Thomay Fontilla (formally known as T-Lo - "The Little One") finally made an appearance on December 11 at 7:44 PM. He weighed in at 5lb 7oz. and was 19 1/2 inches long.It all started late Friday evening (actually it started 9 months ago...but that's a different story) with Ruth calling RJ home from school around midnight. After many consistent contractions, they all but stopped when RJ got home. On Saturday and Sunday, the contractions became more regular over time. On Sunday night, we called the midwives (who said we still had plenty of time) and then Ruth proceeded to kick RJ's butt in Wii Bowling!
Monday morning came with the contractions more frequent and more regular. Around 9:45 we left for the hospital, Yale New Haven, and by the time we arrived (after struggling through I-95 construction), Ruth was dilated 4.5 cms. We "checked in" to our room on Labor and Delivery and by 7:44, the long weekend was over and we understood what all the fuss was about.
The only minor complications during the delivery were Kai's umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck and he had a lower heartbeat rate than the midwives would have liked. So, Ruth got hooked up to a portable IV and Kai had to stay on a portable baby monitor (a tape around Ruth's belly) to be sure he was ok. At about 8 cms dilated, Ruth got some pitocin to keep things going. Once Kai's head was out, the umbilical cord was cut from around his neck, and the rest of him came out. Ruth didn't take any pain medication during the delivery, so once he was placed on Ruth's chest, he was alert and looking around. We got to enjoy his wide eyes and first time feeding.
Although Kai was small, he didn't lose that much weight in the hospital and he's been eating heartily since we "learned" proper latch-on. He already looks as if he's filling out his skin more and more after each feeding.
Ruth, RJ, Kai, and Cosmo are all happy to be home and enjoying this time of transition.
